If 2020 is going to be the year you refresh your abode – or rooms within it, take note of these must-have looks for the year ahead. Alternatively, incorporate one or two trends for a modern take that brings your home into the present.

Mother nature
From a natural palette accented with earthy tones of forest greens and sunburnt clays, to natural materials such as timber, stone, linen and jute, the imperfect and the organic promise a zen-like existence that is both mindful and calming.

Think recycled timber for your centrepiece dining table or sideboard; a pair of rattan armchairs to complement your textured sofa, ottoman or rug; floor cushions; and artisan-like creations that complement the look.

Step back in time
In a nod to the past, but with a modern twist, soft lines and feminine shapes reminiscent of the Art Deco era will continue to trend. Team vibrant shades of velvet with curvy lounge suites, floor lamps and vases. Decorative glass will also make a comeback, so if an entire wall of fluted glass panelling is a step too far, consider adding a feature pendant light or invest in a cabinet with glass panels already built in.

Other looks to consider in 2020
Continuing on the nature path, greenery will remain a focus both outside and in. If adding plants to the list of things to care for doesn’t appeal, simply step inside a homewares store for an abundance of artificial options that’ll have even the greenest of thumbs convinced.

While black and white will be popular in 2020, so too will colourful art – on a large scale: murals, wallpaper, decals, you name it. And if you can’t decide on an artwork, geometric patterns aren’t going anywhere. You’ll see them scaled down on cushions, throws, bed linen or a feature chair.
