As the evenings close in and our lifestyles adapt to the chill in the air, it’s also time to prepare our homes for a cosier ambience over the cooler months. A few tweaks and it will be functional and on-trend for Autumn-Winter 2021.
FINE-TUNE YOUR COLOUR SCHEME
Whether you’re in the market for some big-ticket changes (see below) or a simple seasonal shift, this time of year is all about nature – green in all its shades, and earthy tones that instantly add warmth: yellows, oranges and soft browns. Pair with jute, cosy throws and timber trims for a look that can span all the latest trends, from boho-chic to minimalist-rustic Japandi.
You needn’t replace an entire setting, but switching a couple of key items can immediately change the feel – and season – of your room. If you can’t go past the latest in design – rattan or wicker – invest in a decorative occasional chair, stunning sideboard or new dining chairs to encircle the ever-reliable dining table. Of course, if you do wish to go all out, we’d struggle to go past a stunning velvet sofa teamed with matching ottoman and contrasting armchair.
RUG UP & DRESS UP
Bring your space into the now with layers and textures that evoke – and provide relief for – the cooler days ahead. Add instant warmth to cold floors with a rug – or rugs – that keep the feet warm and add style. Swap light-weight, tropical cushions for warmer textures such as velvet, wool or faux fur. Add warmer throws, and consider more efficient window dressings such as blinds, sheers or curtains. Accessorise with a rattan mirror, woven baskets and on-trend storage, but keep in mind simplicity is key for the zen-like Japandi look.
