Summer may still be with us, but on paper at least a cool change is imminent. Now’s the time to prepare your home for the colder months ahead to ensure you stay warm – and on trend.

Dress warmly
A seasonal update needn’t be arduous. Switching up accessories can completely change the look – and feel – of a room. By adding sumptuous layers – blankets, cushions, a rug – you add texture and warmth. Think soft wools, luxurious cashmere, the cosiness of tartan or tweed. In 2019, warmer tones are key to radiating a welcoming winter vibe. In the bedroom, swap cotton sheets for flannel, and update the cover of your heavier duvet with warm, natural tones. If you’re looking for a key piece to herald the season, turn your eye to velvets, herringbone, even corduroy.

Lighten up
With the darker months comes the desire to brighten your home. Rather than going for the brighter, blue lights overhead, add warmth and cosiness with multiple, juxtaposing lighting such as floor lamps, table lamps, candles.

Hide the winter clutter
If a ‘mud room’ isn’t on the cards but all that winter paraphernalia drives you nuts, you can keep your entry zen-like with a little investment and reorganisation. Make space for beautiful cabinetry that doubles as a hideaway for boots and muddy sports gear, and introduce a stylish rack for hats, coats and scarves.

Summer isn’t far away
If you’ve now put off installing ceiling fans until next summer, think again. Get one with a reverse function and it will create a beautiful microclimate throughout winter as well – and keep the power bill down.
